Field Trip - Oregon Caves National Monument - Big Tree Trail and Cave Tour

Leader:John Roth (Chief of Resources Management at Oregon Caves National Park).
Difficulty: Moderate
Altitude Gain: 1100 feet from archway
Description: We will be out all morning and into the early afternoon on the Big Tree Trail (3 mile loop), so bring plenty of water, a lunch and sun screen. We will look at differences in vegetation on diorite, serpentine, peridotite, marble, and argillite. Lunch at high elevation serpentine. Rain gear is always advisable as afternoon showers can pop up. We will be back to the Caves around 3 pm for an hour long trip through the first third of the cave to see great examples of mycorrhizae.
Driving Directions: Leave DCC 8:30. Option to meet John at 8:50 at the Visitor Center on Caves Hwy 46 (a short distance on the right, after you turn on Hwy 46 at the Chevron Station at the south end of Cave Junction before proceeding up Hwy 46 for 20 miles (about half an hour) to the big parking lot at Oregon Caves.
